What is your name and role at girls on the run? Joy Heuer, Executive Director Girls on the Run Sierras (GOTR) What is girls on the run? What goals do they seek to accomplish?We inspire girls to become joyful, healthy and confident while using an interactive based curriculum that incorporates physical activity. Each girl will have a unique goal for the program ... some work to find their voice and speak up, others work on healthy eating habits while some will learn skills to make new friends. What kinds of programs does girls on the run offer?GOTR is a 10-week confidence building and social emotional learning program that take place after school. The girls and coaches meeting for 90 minutes twice a week after school to work thought the GOTR lessons. The program ends with a celebration 5K where the girls and their running buddies participate. We do not time the race, every girl is #1 because she will finish the 5K. Why is confidence so important for young girls?I believe confidence is so important because it is a skill the girl will use daily throughout her life. She will need confidence to stand up for herself and others. She will need confidence to try out for a team or play. She will need confidence to interview for a job and so on. Do you have any particular success stories from girls on the run?
Too many to share! It is inspiring to see a shy girl start the program and at the end of the 10 weeks blossom and find her voice. It is inspiring to watch a girl make new friends and resolve conflict in a king manner. It is inspiring to hear that a girl talks with her family about the GOTR lessons and the family is now evolving because of what the girl is learning. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Girls on the Run is always looking for energetic women to coach our girls on the run teams. We believe it is very impactful for young girls to see women giving back and sharing their story of growing up. Our young ladies need role models. You will make an impact by becoming a GOTR coach!
